Welcome to our latest edition of the Parish Newsletter
Welcome to our Winter edition of the Parish
Newsletter
Precept (Parish Rates) – the Parish Council has set a precept
at £14300 for 2010/11. This is an increase of £3200 (or 6p per
week per Band D property) on last years. The increase is to
allow the Parish Council to recoup its reserves following the
fire on the playing fields.
We’re Quality – Draycott Parish Council has just been
re-accredited as a Quality Parish Council. The award is only
made to Parish Councils who pass a series of tests to demonstrate
that they are truly representative of their community and actively
engage with all its members. The Council must also show that it is
properly managed with a suitably qualified Clerk. Draycott Parish
Council first received this award in 2005 and is delighted to have
received re-accreditation. It is one of only two parish councils in
Erewash to have passed the stringent tests and the certificate was
presented to the Council by a representative from the Derbyshire
Association of Parish Councils at the November Parish Council
meeting.
Power of Well-being – Councillors and the Clerk have been attending
special training courses to enable the Parish Council to obtain the
‘Power of Well-Being’. This is a statutory power which enables local
councils to ‘achieve the promotion or improvement of the economic,
social or environment well-being’ for its area. Only Parish Councils
which meet the necessary criteria can use these powers and Draycott
Parish Council is pleased to be one of only two parish councils in
Erewash with these powers.
Meetings - Parish Council Meetings are held on the 2nd Tuesday of each month
(except August) at the Parish Rooms at 7.30pm. The first 15
minutes of the meeting is set aside for residents to raise concerns.
Further details can be found on the notice boards and on the web-site.
Being a Parish Councillor! – If you want to do something positive for
your village and make a difference –then being a Parish Councillor may
be for you. Parish Council elections are held every 4 years.
There are restrictions on who can become a Parish Councillor –
you have to be over 18 years old and there are residential rules
(further details available from Erewash Borough Council’s Elections Officer).
There is no financial reward for being a Parish Councillor but it will provide
you with an opportunity to bring local issues to the attention of the
Council and help it make decisions on behalf of the local community.
If you would like to know more about the role of the Parish Council
and how to become a Councillor please contact one of the present
Councillors or the Parish Clerk. Their details are in the newsletter.
A useful booklet called ‘All about parish and town councils (2007)’
can be downloaded from www.nalc.gov.uk or obtained from the
Clerk.

Do you enjoy Running?
Would you like to meet new people?
Would you like to give something back to your community?
Jog Derbyshire is for you!
Jog Derbyshire is the county’s recreational running network. There are over 40 groups, 100 trained leaders and over 600 members throughout Derbyshire. Groups are set up in locations such as leisure centres, village halls, schools and even local pubs! In Erewash there are currently groups established at Rutland Sports Park in Ilkeston, Friesland Sports Centre in Sandiacre and West Park in Long Eaton.
All groups are led by fully qualified volunteer leaders. Training and insurance is provided free of charge for volunteers by England Athletics and UK Athletics. The usual cost is £90, but this is fully subsidised by Jog Derbyshire.
Anyone with a keen interest in running and the motivation to lead is welcome to train as a Jog Derbyshire leader. You don’t need to be a top athlete, just enough to keep one stop ahead of your group! Remember, you don’t need speed to lead!
If you would like to launch a Jog Derbyshire group in your area, or would like to know more about the project, please contact Tom Crampton on 01773 571 234, email tom.crampton@derbyshire.gov.uk or visit the website www.activederbyshire.co.uk/jog

“Hold a Fish and Chip Supper to help spinal cord injured people live full and independent lives.”
Great British Fish and Chip Supper – Friday 21st May 2010
Want to do something different? Want to raise money where you live or work? Want to eat Fish and Chips, while raising money for charity? Hold a fish and chip supper on Friday 21st May 2010 whilst raising awareness of spinal cord injury and supporting SIA’s information and support services.
You can hold a fish and chip supper in your own home, at work or hold a larger supper at your local community centre.
SIA will provide a fundraising pack containing hints and tips, recipes, invitations and donation envelopes. By inviting 7 friends and asking them to donate an additional £5.00 means you will raise at least £35.00 from your supper but we will also give you additional fundraising ideas to raise even more money for SIA.
Last year we had over 80 suppers taking part in England and Wales. In 2010 we want to double that figure and ensure we can provide more support to spinal cord injured people.
The money raised from the suppers will help the Spinal Injuries Association offer support to individuals who become paralysed and their families, from the moment a spinal injury occurs, and for the rest of their lives by providing services and publications which enable and encourage paralysed people to lead independent lives.
Every year in the UK over 1,000 people experience a spinal cord injury and there are an estimated 40,000 spinal cord injured people in the UK alone.
Community Fundraising Officer, Elizabeth Wright, says, “The Fish and Chip Supper is a wonderful opportunity for a great evening with friends and family. We are also encouraging people who work to hold a Fish and Chip Lunch in their work places to raise even more funds. You may be even a local community group wanting to run a fun evening with your group.
Be a part of something special and make a real difference to help spinal cord injured people gain access to the information and support they need to enable them to live full and independent lives.”
For more information or request a fundraising pack call Elizabeth Wright on 0845 678 6633 xtn 229 or email fishandchips@spinal.co.uk or visit www.spinal.co.uk
